Fitting in Three Dimensions
Author:  Michael Nilsson, Ph.D., Vice President of Auditory Research, Director, Center for Amplification and Hearing Research
Description:  A new approach to dealing with patient objections to hearing aid fittings has been proposed. This method relates the frequency, amplitude and phase characteristics of objectionable sounds to the frequency, amplitude, and time of arrival through the hearing aid system. Audience volunteers will be used to demonstrate, via real-ear measures displayed to the audience, the required changes to the hearing aid response that are associated with various sound quality complaints. Nasality vs throatiness of a patient’s own voice, internalization versus externalization of sound, as well as other adjustments will be demonstrated.

What Happens When I Do That?
Author:  Michael Nilsson, Ph.D., Vice President of Auditory Research, Director, Center for Amplification and Hearing Research
Description:  Hearing aids amplify sound based upon basic components: input level, frequency, signal characteristics, etc.. It should be easy to transfer manipulations and adjustments from one manufacturer’s software to another, but it isn’t. This course will translate various controls and parameters back to a common framework so that the audience better understands the repercussions of changes to these parameters, and makes application in different systems possible.

Course Type:  Recorded Course

Determining Moisture Resistance Through Accelerated Life Testing
Author:  Michael Nilsson, Ph.D., Vice President of Auditory Research, Director, Center for Amplification and Hearing Research
Description:  Small, cosmetically appealing BTE devices have become popular, but run a higher risk of damage from moisture exposure than previous configurations of hearing aids. To understand differences in moisture susceptibility, devices were tested in a moisture chamber using standardized protocols to determine differences among case designs and to better understand moisture resistance. Specific design elements to control for moisture flow as well as prevent moisture contamination will be reviewed to better understand the design issues that go into moisture resistance in small hearing aids.
Course Type:  Recorded Course
