For someone who has not encountered many ANSD infants, I recently diagnosed two infants, ranging from 1mo - 6mos. This study offered a well organized review of the hallmark findings of ANSD and approach to future evaluations, specifically focusing on behavioral auditory information, which likely will take a while before the patient is capable of providing such subjective findings.

ANSD is one of those areas of practice that doesn't get any attention until you have a kiddo with ANSD then you're trying to find every resource you can because intervention can be such a challenge. This was a great presentation of facts and resources and also a great reminder of why I'm serving on the intervention end. That fine-tuned audiology science makes my brain cramp. ;)

Data presented on temporal and spectral deficiencies supports my clinical observations that children with ANSD tend to do well with early auditory skills that are redundant or steady state sounds (eg. Learning to Listen sounds, or noticing environmental sounds such as engine sounds, bells, music) but have significant difficulty with discrimination of words, phrases and sentences with highly variable and rapid changes in phonemes. Loved this detailed analysis and evidence - perfect marriage between clinical practice and research!
