Protecting Musicians with Hearing Loss Against Employment Discrimination

Course Abstract

This presentation will explore the duty of certain employers to accommodate disabled musicians, to protect against dangerous workplace noise, to provide medical leave, and to compensate work-related injuries. We will also examine creative strategies to protect musicians who may be denied statutory protections because they work for smaller employers or are deemed independent contractors.

  • After this course learners will be able to explain basic concepts from the Americans with Disabilities Act (e.g. discrimination, retaliation, and reasonable accommodation) and their application to musicians and other hearing-impaired workers.
  • After this course learners will be able to describe the basic provisions of other employment laws (e.g. OSHA, FMLA, and worker's compensation) that may protect or offer benefits to musicians exposed to dangerous levels of workplace noise.
  • After this course learners will be able to describe "creative strategies" and resources to protect musicians who are not covered by the foregoing laws.
