To best understand what can be done to compensate for sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), it is essential to relate treatment approaches to the underlying change in signal encoding. In this seminar, the psychoacoustic changes that underlie SNHL will be reviewed followed by an examination of current treatment approaches in light of these changes.

The process of the development of the preliminary model of the client-centered approach to care in hearing aid uptake is described briefly. The model and its elements are discussed. Examples are used to explain each element and how to incorporate the model into clinical practice.

Previous HOPE Online sessions have outlined ways in which parents and therapists might make use of today’s cool tech “toys” to develop and reinforce listening, speech and spoken language skills. But, are they equally as useful for teens and adults? Learners in today’s session should come away with ways to capitalize on the motivational aspects of handheld technology, ideas for specific apps, and an appreciation for their place in both therapist-led and self-guided practice for these age groups.

The delivery of speech and language services to children with hearing loss through telepractice is more viable today as teleconferencing equipment and Internet technologies become more reliable and cost-effective. Likewise, adults with hearing loss, especially those with cochlear implants, require aural rehabilitation services to maximize communication. In this presentation, a model of telepractice developed to serve children and adults with hearing loss will be presented as well as a range of issues that impact the delivery of telepractice services.

Bilateral cochlear implants are discussed from a therapy/educational perspective. Practices for creating positive listening experiences are discussed. Included are examples of activities for developing auditory skills according to an auditory hierarchy.
