This presentation will provide a comprehensive overview of a protocol used to select, verify, and validate hearing aid fittings in adults. This protocol includes:- A comprehensive audiometric evaluation,
- Loudness discomfort measures in dB SPL near the TM,
- Assessment of motivation,
- Counseling on hearing aid options including microphone and signal processing options,
- Electroacoustic measures of hearing aid performance,
- Unaided and aided outcome measures,
- Real ear performance:
- For linear signal processing,
- For nonlinear signal processing,
- RESR90,
- Loudness judgments for speech at 50, 65 and 80 dB SPL
Questions- Is patient motivation an important factor to consider in the hearing aid selection process?
- Can loudness discomfort level be accurately predicted from audiometric threshold?
- What are some current methods available to assess noise reduction algorithms in DSP hearing aids?
- Are manufacturer “First Fits” appropriate for setting the initial parameters of hearing aids?
Course Objectives
- As a result of the information received in this activity, the participant should be able to identify how this protocol can be implemented in clinics.
- As a result of the information received in this activity, the participant should be able to discuss why it may be in the best interest of the audiologist and patient to implement a similar protocol.
- As a result of the information received in this activity, the participant should be able to discuss the usefulness of obtaining individual loudness measures.
