Additional Course Information
Inappropriate classroom acoustics can compromise the academic achievement and psychosocial function of both children with normal hearing and children with hearing loss.
Speech perception, listening, and learning are often deleteriously affected by the acoustic characteristics of the classroom. Specifically, past research has demonstrated that inappropriate classroom acoustics can compromise academic performance, reading, spelling, behavior, attention, and concentration in children with normal and impaired hearing (see Crandell, Smaldino, & Flexer, 2004 for a review of past studies). One solution in reducing the deleterious effects of inadequate room acoustics is the utilization of either a personal or sound field Frequency Modulation (FM) amplification system. The present discussion will examine current research issues, many conducted by the presenter, concerning the utilization of FM amplification in the educational setting. Specifically, the following areas will be addressed: (1) effects of FM amplification on speech perception, behavior, listening, psychoeducational/ psychosocial development, and academic achievement; (2) appropriate pediatric populations for implementation of FM amplification; (3) effects of sound-field amplification on vocal dysfunction in teachers; (4) comparable analysis of various commercially available personal and sound field FM and Infrared amplification systems; (5) comparison of personal and sound-field amplification with other forms of classroom amplification; (6) procedures for evaluating the efficiency of FM units in the classroom; (7) behind the ear personal FM systems; and (8) parent, teacher, and student perception of FM amplification use in the classroom.
Course Objectives
- Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to Discuss the effects of classroom acoustics on speech perception, behavior, listening, psychoeducational/psychosocial development, and academic achievement.
- Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to Distinguish appropriate FM and/or Infrared technologies for children with normal hearing and hearing loss.
- Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to Identify the effects of classroom amplification on speech perception, behavior, listening, psychoeducational/psychosocial development, and academic achievement.
- Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to Recognize procedures and available tests for evaluating the efficiency of amplification systems in the classroom.
