LACE (Listening and Auditory Communication Enhancement), is a cost effective, home-based, interactive adaptive computer program designed to engage the adult hearing impaired listener in the hearing aid fitting process, provide listening strategies, build confidence, and address cognitive changes characteristic of the aging process. Concepts underlying the development of this therapy will be described.
This is a Live Course which requires a Windows computer with speakers/headphones and a high-speed internet (Cable/DSL or faster) connection to participate. Take the short Test Drive to prepare your computer for this event. More information available in the FAQs/Help section.

Additional Course Information
Patients presenting similar audiometric profiles frequently obtain diverse benefit from amplification. One reason is related to the optimal integration of acoustic, linguistic, and environmental cues. Hearing-impaired individuals have neural plastic changes along with relearning of sound patterns. Some individuals utilize compensatory strategies that may result in successful hearing aid use. Others, however, are not so fortunate. Modern hearing aids can provide audibility, but may not rectify spectral and temporal resolution, susceptibility to noise, or degradation of cognitive skills associated with aging. Auditory training has long been advocated to enhance communication but has never been time or cost-effective. The software will be demonstrated and multi-site validation data will be presented.
Course Objectives
- At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to discuss the basic concepts of neural plasticity and cognitive degradation associated with aging.
- At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to describe a new low-cost, minimal time investment interactive training procedure to engage patients in auditory rehabilitation.
- At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to use the above concepts in order to counsel patients, physicians, and insurers about the necessity for audiologic rehabilitation in conjunction with hearing aid fittings.
