This presentation identifies the important contribution that the cochlear implant makes to vocabulary learning. Recommendations for early vocabulary development will be made. The role that vocabulary plays in subsequent reading comprehension will be explored. Issues related to vocabulary storage and retrieval will also be addressed.

- Participants will be able to identify the three aspects of vocabulary: size, breadth and depth.
- Participants will be able to compare and contrast features of semantic organization of the lexicon with phonologic organization of the lexicon.
- Participants will be able to critically evaluate a child’s need for definitional knowledge of a word
