Sound Speech for Speech Sounds (HOPE)

This course explores speech development through listening with children who have cochlear implant(s). Speech acoustics are applied to practical techniques for eliciting and transferring specific speech sounds into language. Examples of language, toys and activities for a “babbling unit” are discussed with real-life applications.

Course Objectives
  • Participants will be able to discuss how to integrate speech acoustics and speech development for children with hearing impairment.

  • Participants will be able to outline how to incorporate techniques for developing speech through listening for consonants with children with hearing impairment.

  • Participants will be able to explain how to use “the babbling units” for children with hearing impairment (Pollack, 1970, 1985, 1997).

  • Participants will be able to discuss how to incorporate language while developing speech sounds for children with hearing impairment.
