Back to School with Cochlear Implants: The Top 10 Things Parents Need to Know (HOPE)

With the majority of children with cochlear implants now attending school in public or private mainstream classrooms, parents should be prepared to aid school personnel in understanding and addressing their child’s needs. This course will review key topics that can help achieve a favorable classroom environment as well as guidance for the classroom teacher. Among the top tips to be addressed are: FM systems and the school’s responsibility for providing them, acoustics, troubleshooting technology, the role of classmates, and best practices for teachers in the classroom.

Course Objectives
  • Participants will be able to discuss how to advise on, or advocate for, FM systems in the classroom.

  • Participants will be able to describe the role of the mainstream classroom teacher in providing a positive classroom environment for the child with a hearing loss.

  • Participants will be able to explain how to initiate actions to involve classmates in addressing the needs of a child with hearing loss.
