Maximizing Outcomes with Minimal Resources: Tips for Kids with Cochlear Implants Without Access to an Auditory Therapist (HOPE)

This presentation will be parent-focused and filled with therapy ideas and activities which can be used by families working with their young child who is deaf or hard of hearing. A Chinese proverb states, "A Parent Is Worth 10,000 Schoolmasters." Keeping that in mind, we will address how parents are and can be their child's best and most important teacher; and my personal belief that clinicians need to re-focus their efforts in teaching parents how to best teach their child.

Course Objectives
  • Participants will be able to list several auditory teaching techniques and their benefits for young children learning to listen with a cochlear implant or hearing aids.

  • Participants will be able to describe the role of families in encouraging spoken language development in their young children with a hearing impairment.

  • Participants will be able to recite numerous materials, games, and activities that might prove to be fun and educational when working with babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and beyond -- which emphasize listening for spoken language development.
