New Hearing App Breaks Down Barriers to Healthy Hearing

Online support kit gives hearing professionals tools and resources to reach more patients.

KITCHENER, CANADA--(Marketwired - Feb. 9, 2015) - Unitron, a global innovator of advanced hearing solutions, is providing hearing healthcare professionals with a new online support kit that will help them break down barriers and improve access to hearing health for people with hearing loss.

Central to the online support kit is uHear™ 2.0, Unitron's popular new screening app, which enables patients to assess their hearing on an iPhone® or iPad® in less than 10 minutes. The hearing app tests for hearing sensitivity, speech in noise and everyday listening performance, while offering patients:

  • Three sophisticated screening tests
  • A new background noise calibrating meter
  • A built-in clinician locator to find the nearest clinic

The screening app is supported by the uHear online support kit, which provides hearing healthcare professionals with tools and resources to educate and engage a broader online audience of people who may be reluctant to seek treatment.

"The impact of untreated hearing loss cannot be ignored," said Dr. Don Hayes, Director of Clinical Research for Unitron. "On average, hearing aid users wait 7- 10 years after their initial diagnosis to be fit with their first set of hearing aids. uHear was developed with the goal to lower barriers to seeking help."

The kit provides hearing healthcare professionals with a variety of downloadable educational content, including digital awareness tools-like web badges, dynamic infographics and social media content- and print material that can be used to empower people with hearing loss to seek the necessary care.

The World Health Organization estimates that 360 million people worldwide suffer from disabling hearing loss. In America alone, that number is 36 million, and only 20 per cent of those people who might benefit from hearing aids actually seek help. Most delay taking action until they cannot communicate even in the best of listening situations.

Early and careful evaluation and support show great promise in mitigating the consequences of hearing loss on long-term health and quality of life.
