San Francisco, Calif. – The Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences hosted its inaugural Doctor of Audiology White Coat Ceremony where 23 students were cloaked with a white coat symbolizing the beginning of their professional audiology education. The event welcomed nearly 125 faculty, staff, family and friends and celebrated an important milestone for the first-year audiology students. Kim Lody, President of ReSound, served as the keynote speaker.

“White coats are symbolic of the professionalism that is expected of students in all clinical professions. This ceremony reaffirms the community's support of the educational process that prepares future health care professionals for practice. The White Coat placed on each of our future audiologists today is more than a just a lab coat - it is a cloak of competence, caring and community,” said Rupa Balachandran, PhD, Audiology Program Director.

Pacific’s doctor of audiology program, located at the University of the Pacific’s San Francisco Campus, is one of four accelerated programs in the country, and the only one in California. Its clinics, Pacific Hearing and Balance Centers in San Francisco and Stockton, along with anticipated collaborations with many Northern California medical and audiology centers, provide students with clinical experience and residencies throughout the San Francisco Bay Area with audiology and hearing aid services through patient visits and community outreach events.

The Doctor of Audiology program at the University of the Pacific has been awarded candidacy status by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and "developing status" by the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education (ACAE).
