Thank you for your interest in submitting a manuscript to The Hearing Journal. I hope you will find the following guidelines helpful.
The most important consideration in deciding which manuscripts to accept is whether or not the content of the proposed article is of practical value to a large portion of our readers. To be valuable, the topic must be relevant to hearing healthcare providers and the information presented must be accurate and timely.
Other important factors include the quality of presentation (text should be clear, easy to read, concise, and not unduly promotional) and accompanying figures, if any, should be of good quality. Also important are the originality of the information presented and the quality of the research (if it is a research paper).
Because of our limited space, brevity is a virtue. Generally, we try to limit articles to no more than 2-3 pages in HJ, or from about 1800 to 2700 words. This is not a hard and fast rule, and certainly the importance or complexity of some topics justifies greater length. On the other hand, shorter articles (say 1 page) are also welcome.
At the end of the manuscript, a brief paragraph should be included giving the author's (or authors') professional position and highest relevant degree and an address (postal and/or e-mail) where readers can contact the author. Authors should indicate if they are employed by or otherwise affiliated with a manufacturer or other commercial enterprise.
Preferably, manuscripts should be e-mailed to David.Kirkwood@wolterskluwer.com or they may be mailed (two copies, please) to David Kirkwood, The Hearing Journal, 108 E. 96th St., Suite 16C, New York, NY 10128. If there are figures, they should be e-mailed on separate attached files in a jpg, tif, or eps format with a resolution of 300 dpi or higher at the size that they will appear. Alternatively, hard copies of figures are acceptable.
Manuscripts are reviewed by the editor and, usually, by one or more outside reviewers. Within 4 to 6 weeks, normally, the person who submitted the manuscript will be contacted.
If your manuscript is selected for publication, it will be edited and the edited draft will be sent to you for your review and approval of the final draft.
I hope this is helpful. If you have any questions, please call me at 212-784-1145 or e-mail me at David.Kirkwood@wolterskluwer.com.
