The introduction of the NOW NT Series in the spring of 2010 brought us Noise Tranquility, a new and different type of processing employing fast-acting noise reduction. This well-researched technology promises to bring a new appreciation for noise reduction algorithms in hearing aids. This class will discuss the difference between NT, (fast-acting noise reduction) and the traditional noise management systems. We discuss the implementation of this technology in the NOW NT product line as part of a comprehensive noise management system including our stable directional microphone technology, expansion, and high level noise management system.

- Attendees will be able to define the three components utilized in the NOW NT product line to ensure comfort and audibility in noise.
- Attendees will be able to define the difference between "positive SNR" and "negative SNR."
- Attendees will be able to define the term "speech preservation."
- Attendees will be able to list three differences between Fast-Acting Noise Reduction and traditional noise management systems.
- Attendees will be able to list the difference in implementation of Noise Tranquility in the various NOW Series technology levels.

Dennis Van Vliet has a Bachelor of Science degree from UC Irvine;a Master of Arts degree from Cal-State University, Fullerton;and a Doctor of Audiology degree from Central Michigan University. He has worked as an audiologist in medical, educational and private practice settings. Professional activities have included formation of the Independent Hearing Aid Fitting Forum, a volunteer study group that developed a comprehensive hearing aid fitting protocol for nonlinear hearing aids, has advocated for evidence based practice, and other professional issues. He has been invited as a speaker in the U.S., and internationally to present information on a variety of hearing aid technology topics and other professional issues. His opinions are expressed monthly in the “Final Word” feature of the Hearing Journal.
