Could you please provide an update regarding the numbers of audiologists who have obtained the Au.D. and who are currently pursuing the Au.D.? What is the projected status of the Au.D. for 2005?

As of June, 2001, there are 512 practicing Au.D.'s in the U.S. There are currently over 1100 Au.D. students nationally and there should be more than 600 practicing Au.D.'s after August 2001 graduations.
There are now 19 programs approved to offer the Au.D. in four-year programs and five distance learning programs offering the Au.D.
In a study I just completed, 86 universities are approved or in approval stages to offer a doctoral degree in clinical audiology. 18 masters level programs are closing within the next year 19 are still deciding on their future. The study is to be published in the July/August issue of "Audiology Today".
Projections for the year 2005 include: 3200 will be enrolled in an Au.D. program, there will be 62 Au.D. programs, there will be more than 2600 practicing Au.D.'s (more than 20% of full-time audiologists), and the Doctor of Audiology will be well on its way to becoming a household name in many areas of the U.S.
