Question
We need help with coding for the SOT (sensory organizational test) done during an ENG. Can audiologists perform this test and can they use the code 97750 in an ENT office without a physical therapist?
Answer
There really is no code for sensory organization testing or protocols, and the CPT system of coding is based on precise description of what each code represents. The code 97750 has the following descriptor: Physical performance test or measurement (eg. Musculoskeletal, functional capacity), with written report, each 15 minutes. This really does not apply to any aspect of an ENG related evaluation and, therefore, would not be appropriate to use by either audiologists or physical therapists in the context of an ENG evaluation. If you want to try to obtain reimbursement for the SOT, you would need to use 92700 (Unlisted otorhynolaryngological service or procedure) and be prepared to justify your charge with a detailed report that documented the time spent performing this, what all is involved, in addition to why it was necessary to perform this procedure. Even then, there is no guarantee of reimbursement for any payer, especially with Medicare, since SOT is not a recognized, unique procedure under the Medicare reimbursement coverage guidelines.
