Ensuring Proper Grounding for ABR Testing

Question

It is my understanding that for ABR testing, I need to ensure that my system is grounded, how can I do this.

Answer

Correct. A proper ground is essential for safe operations and to get good ABR recordings. I would even take this a step further and state that you need a dedicated ground for your ABR system that is not shared with other electrical devices. A good electrician can help you out with this. Here is a simple way to check your ground.

  1. Use a voltage meter and measure directly from the wall outlet.

  2. The voltage between phase (hot) socket and zero (neutral) socket must be a stable 117 V.

  3. If the recorded voltage is much less than 117 V the ground is not connected to ground. Even though you can see the lead inside the wall outlet this lead is not connected to ground.

  4. Check the Voltage between zero (neutral) and ground, must be 0 V. If the recorded voltage differs much from 0 V, such as 110 the ground is not connected to ground. Even though you can see the lead inside the wall outlet this lead is not connected to ground.
