Same Day Billing for Audio Procedures and Medical Procedures

Robert C. Fifer, PhD

March 10, 2003

Question

In an ENT practice, what are the procedures that if billed with an audio procedure with the same date of service result in only one or the other being paid, that is, only the medical procedure or only the audio?

Answer

To my knowledge, the only code that is restricted by Medicare (for which some other companies are following suit) is cerumen removal. There are currently restrictions on billing for cerumen removal and either an audiogram or ENG on the same date of service. I am not aware of any other circumstances where either the physician can bill for the exam or the bill go forward for the audiogram. If there is a restriction, it is most likely a private third party payer who has arbitrarily made that designation.
