Question

I was interested to learn more about SeboTek hearing aids. Is the receiver/speaker separated from the digital processor and is it located deep in the ear canal? How does the separation of the mic and the speaker impact feedback issues?

Answer

The SeboTek PAC is designed similar to behind-the-ear (BTE) instruments. The key difference is - rather than having a BTE style ear hook/tube, the PAC has a connector assembly called the speaker (receiver) ''link.'' The link is a thin gauge, pre-formed wire with a two-prong connector at one end and the receiver on the other end. The connector can be plugged and unplugged, making it easy to change receivers in the office. A flexible ear tip made of medical grade silicone fits over the receiver and keeps the receiver comfortably positioned deep in the canal.

Regarding feedback, the PAC offers two solutions. By physically separating the directional microphone from the PAC speaker (receiver) using the above mentioned deep fitting technique, more distance is placed between the mic and the receiver than on any other ear level worn device. The farther apart these components are, the less likely it is that feedback will occur. The second solution occurs from using deep fitting silicone ear tips that seal the ear canal -- without an occlusion effect. Sealing the ear canal reduces or eliminates the opportunity for sound to ''leak'' from the speaker (receiver) to the microphone.

The final judge of the success of a new fitting will of course be the patient, and the criteria that they use may not always be in line with an objective audiological measure. This course will review some of the issues and options at play when having the patient weigh in on the value of the new devices.

As most hearing care professionals know, the functional capabilities of individuals with hearing loss are defined by more than the audiogram. Many of these functional capabilities fall under the rubric, auditory wellness. This podcast will be a discussion between Brian Taylor of Signia and his guest, Barbara Weinstein, professor of audiology at City University of New York. They will outline the concept of auditory wellness, how it can be measured clinically and how properly fitted hearing aids have the potential to improve auditory wellness.
