Question

What does Sonic offer in terms of Noise Reduction, specifically for wind noise and impulse sounds?

Answer

Our newer products – including Flip and Bliss – have a Wind Noise Reduction system.

When wind is detected, Wind Noise Reduction quickly sets the lowest frequencies to an omni directional response and attenuates the low and mid-range frequencies for comfort.

The system compares the noise in each microphone to determine when wind is present. If the noise is correlated (that is, that if the noise is similar in both microphones), then it is considered to be environmental noise. If it is uncorrelated (that is, if it is quite different in each microphone), then it is likely wind.

Our newer products – including Flip and Bliss – include Impulse Noise Reduction at the Premium level product category.  Impulse Noise Reduction identifies impulsive sounds by examining the input and checking for the traits characteristic of impulse-type sounds (loud, sudden, short). Once identified, these sounds are suppressed using fast acting output compression to avoid modifying other parts of the input that may contain important speech cues.
