Question

What are the key features and improvements of the MED-EL SONNET 3 audio processor?

Answer

The SONNET 3 is MED-EL's smallest and lightest behind-the-ear audio processor, designed for maximum comfort and convenience. It features an ergonomic silicone earhook and a compact, lightweight design that is over 18% shorter and 2.0 grams lighter than its predecessor, the SONNET 2 with AudioStream. One of its most significant upgrades is the integration of direct wireless streaming from both Android™ and Apple® devices, eliminating the need for an intermediary device for phone calls and music. For added convenience, the SONNET 3 has a touch key that can be customized to change programs or enter standby mode. It is also a highly durable device with an IP68 waterproof rating, making it resistant to rain, sweat, and brief immersions in water.

In terms of sound quality, the SONNET 3 combines several advanced technologies to deliver a hearing experience that is closer to natural hearing. It utilizes dual microphones and Automatic Sound Management 3.0 (ASM 3.0) to automatically adapt to different listening environments, reducing background noise and focusing on speech. The SONNET 3 also incorporates FineHearing sound coding, which mimics the natural timing of sound processing for low-frequency sounds, providing a more natural sound quality. This, combined with MED-EL's flexible electrode arrays, allows for a superior hearing experience, even in challenging listening situations. Furthermore, the SONNET 3 is designed to be compatible with any hearing aid for bimodal listening, and it includes features that are especially beneficial for pediatric users, such as a tamperproof design and a link-check indicator for parents.

MED-EL offers various electrode lengths for the best individual fit for each CI recipient. We’ve taken the next step forward by using imaging to visualize where the electrode sits after implantation within a patient’s cochlea. This information is then used to individualize the recipient’s map based on the real location of each electrode contact, before proceeding with fitting as usual. For the first time, audiologists are now able to best match the frequency settings to the natural pitch information unique to each patient’s ear. This webinar reviews Anatomy-Based Fitting, which is easy to implement with a just a few clicks in the MAESTRO fitting software.
