Key Features

The SONNET 3 is MED-EL's smallest, lightest, and most advanced behind-the-ear audio processor, built to provide leading-edge technology while empowering connection for cochlear implant recipients. Compared to its predecessor, the SONNET 3 is 18% shorter and 2 grams lighter, and it introduces an aerodynamic, robust housing with a new flexible ear hook designed to improve comfort across a wide range of ear shapes and sizes.

The processor's core features are organized around four pillars: built-in direct streaming, a smaller and lighter design, a new and improved touch key and housing, and a waterproof build.

Built-In Direct Streaming and Pairing

One of the standout features of the SONNET 3 is its built-in direct wireless streaming capability, which allows phone calls, music, and other audio to stream directly to the processor without an intermediary device. The SONNET 3 uses 2.4 GHz Bluetooth Low Energy technology and is compatible with both Android ASHA and Apple MFi protocols, ensuring seamless connectivity across the smartphones recipients already use.

This direct streaming capability also extends to compatible accessories and to bilateral or  bimodal use with compatible hearing aids.

Pairing a SONNET 3 to a compatible smartphone is straightforward: turn the audio processor off, place it close to the mobile device (within 3 centimeters), turn the processor back on, and then switch on Bluetooth on the mobile device, pairing through the device's Accessibility settings on iPhones or through standard Bluetooth settings on Android phones.

Compatible Accessories

SONNET 3 accessories are designed to enhance the recipient experience by offering flexibility, ease of use, and advanced functionality. The AudioLink XT combines a remote microphone, TV streamer, integrated telecoil, and FM adapter into a single device connected via the ASHA protocol, with roughly 10 hours of continuous streaming and a range of  at least 32 feet. The AudioKey 3 app provides remote control of volume and programs along with Find My Processor, guardian roles, and listening statistics, while the HearCare app supports system checks, implant diagnostics, and configuration backups. The FineTuner Echo, now updated with Bluetooth Low Energy support, offers improved range, stability, and reliability as a dedicated remote control or audio processor test device.

Together, these accessories form the SONNET 3's compatible ecosystem, shown together below.

Andrea Hedley-Williams received her bachelor’s degree in Hearing and Speech Sciences from the University of Virginia and her Master of Audiology and Au.D. degrees from Vanderbilt University. She worked as a cochlear implant audiologist and researcher at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and the Bill Wilkerson Hearing and Speech Center for 25 years before joining MEDEL in 2016. At MEDEL, Andrea first served as a Clinical Account Manager in the Northeast and South regions before transitioning to the Education Team, where she now works as a Clinical Education Manager.
