Short-term use of hearing aids resulted in significantly lower self-perceived listening difficulty, acceptance of higher speech and noise levels, higher fluid cognition performance, and increased autonomous motivation. Hearing aid use also enhanced neural inhibition of irrelevant sounds. Participants with higher hours of hearing aid use tended to show higher fluid cognition performance and autonomous motivation.

Dr. Erin C. Schafer is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology at the University of North Texas (UNT), where she has been a faculty member since 2005. She earned her Ph.D. in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Texas at Dallas in 2005. Her research focuses on the assessment and (re)habilitation of adults and children with hearing loss and auditory disorders, resulting in over 100 publications, four textbooks, numerous presentations at national and international conferences, and external grants and gifts. Dr. Schafer serves as the Editor of Audiology Today for the American Academy of Audiology and is a past President and Journal Editor for the Educational Audiology Association.

Sharon Miller
PhD
Sharon Miller is an Associate Professor and the Director of Graduate Studies for Audiology in the Department of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. She earned her Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in Audiology and SpeechLanguage-Hearing Science from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and has a B.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Northwestern University. Dr. Miller directs the Brain and Behavior Lab at UNT, and the long-term goal of her research is to establish an integrative program that combines behavioral and electrophysiological measures to address fundamental questions about brain plasticity and language in adults and children with hearing loss. She also teaches courses in the Doctor of Audiology program at UNT on the topics of hearing aids, electrophysiology, and speech perception.
