This course examines how cochlear implant (CI) candidacy and outcome assessment have evolved as speech perception performance has improved among implant users. There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that word recognition may be a better metric for determining performance, but little research focuses on the relationship between phonemic recognition and sentence recognition.

Brittany Kempinski

Brittany has a doctorate in Audiology and extensive experience in cochlear implants, auditory rehabilitation, and hearing health access for underserved and rural populations. She completed her fourth year externship at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona and earned her degree in 2014. She later served as a cochlear implant audiologist on the Mayo Clinic Cochlear Implant Team in Rochester, Minnesota until 2019. Following her work at Mayo Clinic, Dr. Kempinski joined Cochlear Americas, where she supported implant recipients, collaborated with clinical partners, and contributed to clinical education initiatives. Dr. Kempinski currently serves veterans in a telehealth capacity for the Department of Veterans Affairs, delivering specialized cochlear implant services to veterans in rural communities who are candidates for, or recipients of, implantable hearing technology. Her work focuses on expanding access, improving continuity of care, and ensuring that veterans receive high-quality, evidence-based support regardless of geographic barriers.
