In this interview, two researchers, Bec Bennett of NAL and Josefina Larsson of ORCA Europe, discuss the multi-faceted concept of empowerment, how to assess empowerment in the clinic, and how empowerment might contribute to better patient outcomes. They provide an analysis of their recently validated self-report, the EmpAQ-5, and how it can be used in clinical practice.

Josefina Larsson
MSc
Josefina Larsson is a Senior Research Audiologist · ORCA Europe WSAudiology. She has a BSc in Audiology (Cert. Audiologist) from Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, a BSc in Phonetics from Stockholm University and a MSc in Audiology from Örebro University.
After graduating in 2003, she started working clinically with hearing rehabilitation at a clinic in Stockholm. She has also been lecturing in audiology diagnostics at the Audiology program at Örebro University and prior to joining the team at ORCA Europe she worked with hearing-aid development as a research audiologist at a hearing-aid company in Copenhagen, Denmark.
In December 2006, she returned to Stockholm and joined the ORCA Europe research group. She now holds a position as Senior research audiologist. Her main research areas of interest are hearing rehabilitation, empowerment and patient-centered care.

Bec Bennett
PhD, AuD, MBUS
Bec is a clinical and research audiologist, with a focus on adult rehabilitation. She joined NAL in 2023 as a Senior Research Audiologist, bringing 18 years of clinical, managerial, industry, teaching and research experience. Bec’s training in psychology and counselling, paired with her experience in clinical management continues to shape her research directions. Her research focuses on best-practices for delivery of adult audiological rehabilitation, the social and emotional well-being impacts of hearing loss, and harnessing technology to augment and enhance audiology service delivery.
Bec completed a Bachelor of Science (Honours in Microbiology and Parasitology) in 2002 and a Masters of Audiology in 2004 at the University of Queensland. While working as a clinical audiologist she completed a Masters of Business through the University of Newcastle to develop her managerial and project management skills. Bec managed a chain of hearing clinics in Western Australia from 2009 to 2013, during which time she competed a Graduate Diploma of Counselling so that she could develop a training program to help her staff develop their skills for providing better social and emotional support to their clients. Bec completed her PhD (School of Medicine) through the University of Western Australia in 2019, and worked as a Research Lead at the Ear Science Institute Australia from 2019 to 2023. During this time, Bec was awarded two competitive post-doctoral research fellowships: (i) a Raine Medical Research Foundation Priming Fellowship 2020-2021, and (ii) a NHMRC Investigator Fellowship 2023-2028.
