Mid-America Dental & Hearing Center in Mt. Vernon will be featured by ABC World News Tonight, on Sunday, October 19th at 5:30 p.m., in a story on the impact of rising health care costs. The Missouri based small business was selected because they have suffered annual premium increases from 18 percent to over 40 percent with costs tripling in less than 6 years.
Scott George, President & CEO at Mid-America Dental & Hearing Center, told ABC News during the interview," The ability of small businesses to provide affordable health care for their employees is a major issue." ABC News also interviewed Dr. Edward Campbell, a dentist in the dental practice (owned by Dr. J. Warren Hildreth) and Cassandra Kirby, a co-worker of Mr. George.
"A key solution is passage of pending Association Health Plans (AHPs) legislation," said George. "AHPs allows small businesses to band together, like large businesses and labor unions, to seek better health insurance rates and coverage," George continued. The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) and many other business organizations support AHPs. According to the Congressional Budget Office, AHPs could result in premium reductions averaging 13 percent with potential savings of up to 25 percent.
Finally, ABC News was interested to learn that Mid-America Dental & Hearing Center potentially offers one solution to the rising costs of health care. As George told ABC News, "Both the dental and hearing practices at Mid-America Dental & Hearing Center have reasonable fees because the savings obtained from economies of scale, fee for service, and in-house labs are passed along to their patients."
