Washington, D.C.: The American Cochlear Implant Alliance (ACI Alliance) announces the award of research grants to Washington University School of Medicine (in St. Louis) and the University of Utah.

The award process was open to all. It is hoped that the research contributes to greater accessibility of cochlear implants. Applicants were invited to submit research proposals in early 2022 with each proposal  thoroughly considered in a blinded process by the ACI Alliance Research Committee chaired by Michael Hoa MD using a robust NIH-style review.

Researchers at Washington University were awarded a grant to study “Adult Cochlear Implant Utilization  in the United States: A Nationwide Analysis.” The study PIs are Kevin Zhan MD, Craig Buchman MD and Angela Mazul PhD, MPH.

Researchers at the University of Utah were awarded a grant to study “Effect of Cochlear Implantation on  Listening-Related Fatigue in School-Age Children: A Pilot Study.” The study PIs are Samantha J. Gustafson AuD, PhD and Neil S. Patel MD.

ACI Alliance is a not-for-profit membership organization created with the purpose of eliminating barriers to cochlear implantation by sponsoring research, driving heightened awareness, and advocating for improved access to cochlear implants for patients of all ages across the US.
