Boys Town Hospital Receives Grants to Study Irreversible Deafness Disorders

OMAHA, Neb./PRNewswire/ -- The Boys Town National Research Hospital, a division of Girls and Boys Town, the original Father Flanagan's Boys' Home, announced today that it has received $3.5 million in grants to study irreversible deafness disorders.

The National Institute on Deafness and Communication disorders, a division of the National Institutes of Health, awarded the grants.

The hospital, through several National Institutes of Health grants researches and treats a variety of deafness and communication disorders, including serving as a National Institutes of Health sponsored Research and Training Center for Hearing Loss in Children.

In addition, the Boys Town National Research Hospital houses one of the largest center's for the study of Usher Syndrome, a genetic disorder that accounts for an estimated 50 percent of all deaf-blind individuals in the U.S. The disorder affects between 30,000 and 40,000 Americans and as many as 30 million people may carry a gene for a subtype of the disorder.

The Boys Town National Research Hospital is a division of Girls and Boys Town, the world-famous youth care organization founded by Father Edward J. Flanagan. Through the hospital and Girls and Boys Town programs across the country, the organization provides direct care and treatment to more than 35,000 children each year. Girls and Boys Town also directly and indirectly assists another 1.7 million children and families through its national hotline (1-800-448-3000) and other outreach and training programs.
