Question

Meet the Nucleus® Nexa® System - The World’s First Smart Cochlear Implant

Answer

Cochlear’s newest implant platform, the Nucleus® Nexa® System, represents a major step forward in cochlear implant innovation. As the first and only smart cochlear implant*^, the Nucleus Nexa System features intelligence built into both the sound processor and the implant itself—a truly new paradigm for long‑term hearing performance.

What does “smart” mean for your patients?

  • Upgradeable (rewritable) implant firmware allows new features and performance enhancements to be delivered directly to the implant—no additional surgery required.^

  • Dynamic Power Management supports all‑day battery life1,# with a smaller, lighter default battery, improving usability without compromising performance.

  • MAPs stored on the implant ensure that individualized settings can be accessed anytime through Smart Sync, preserving fitting intent even if a processor is lost, damaged, or upgraded.

If you're new to the Nucleus Nexa System or want a foundational overview for clinical practice, this one‑hour, pre-recorded webinar available exclusively on AudiologyOnline is the perfect place to begin. You’ll walk away with a clear understanding of what sets the Nucleus Nexa System apart and how these smart capabilities translate to real benefits for your patients.

* The only cochlear implant having onboard memory with upgradeable firmware.

^ As future advancements or technology become available for the CI1000 series implant, a firmware update may be required in order to take advantage of newer features.

# Battery life varies for every user, according to the age of the battery, the programs used each day, your implant type, the thickness of skin covering your implant, and the size and type of battery used. Streaming from compatible devices, True Wireless devices or FM may decrease sound processor battery life depending on how often and for how long streaming is engaged. Typical expected battery life is calculated using default map settings used with a CI1000 series implant. All day hearing is defined as 16 hours.

Chronic Otitis Media (COM) may contribute more than half of the global burden of hearing loss, but there is no global consensus on diagnostic and treatment guidelines for hearing loss due to the disease. Research suggests that bone conduction may be an effective and patient-preferred alternative to treating COM-related hearing loss versus hearing aids for many patients, providing consistent and reliable access to sound regardless of the disease cycle. Topics in this course will include background on the disease process, an introduction to bone conduction solutions, and expected outcomes of the intervention.
