Tele-audiology has rapidly expanded as a strategy to improve access to hearing healthcare, particularly for patients in rural or underserved areas. This course provides an overview of tele-audiology service within a healthcare system. Topics include: examples of synchronous and asynchronous tele-audiology services, required equipment and space considerations, and strategies for integrating virtual care into existing clinical workflows. In addition, barriers to implementation, including licensure, reimbursement, and privacy considerations are covered. Participants will gain practical knowledge on evaluating how tele-audiology may enhance patient access, clinical efficiency, and care delivery within their own organizations. This course is presented in partnership with the Academy of VA Audiologists.

Dr. Melissa Pereira serves as the Audiology Section Chief for the VA Northern California Healthcare System. In this role, she provides strategic leadership for audiology services across multiple clinical sites, supporting initiatives that expand access to high quality hearing healthcare for Veterans. Dr. Pereira works closely with specialty program leaders to include tele audiology, to advance innovative service delivery models and improve system wide access to care. She currently serves as the President of the Association of VA Audiologists (AVAA), where she advocates for the advancement of audiology practice and professional development of audiologists working for the VA. Dr. Pereira is also a U.S. Army veteran and remains deeply committed to improving healthcare access and outcomes for fellow Veterans through clinical leadership, program development, and innovation in Veteran-centered care.

Dr. Sunny Burdick currently serves as the Teleaudiology Section Chief for VA Northern California. She leads one of the first fully remote audiology teams in the country and has rapidly expanded her team to 6 remote audiologists and 7 audiology Health Technicians and to five sites since 2022. She is the recipient of the 2025 Association of VA Audiologists VA Early Career Professional Award and has presented nationally and at California Academy of Audiology on the topic of Teleaudiology.
