This 2-part course series addresses collaboration with psychology for counseling as part of audiological management of hearing loss. Psychological post-trauma reactions to audiology office visits are described. Carkhuff’s (2014) helping skills, Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Listen, Empathize, Agree, Partner (L.E.A.P.), which are counseling strategies used to manage obesity, smoking cessation, alcohol use, exercise regimen, drug addiction and medication compliance, are reviewed. The course provides a rationale and explanation for application of these tools and strategies for managing patient denial and ambivalence toward hearing aid use as well as compliance with audiological recommendations.

David Citron III
Owner/Director of South Shore Hearing Center
David Citron, III, Ph.D., FAAA, is CEO of David Citron and Associates, an audiology practice management and customer excellence firm.
Dr. Citron spent 34 years of his career at South Shore Hearing Center, a full-service audiology practice that he co-founded in 1982 and sold in 2016. Prior to his time in private practice, Dr. Citron held a variety of clinical and clinical administration roles including Director of Audiology at Kaiser-Permanente Medical Center in Oakland, CA, clinical instructor and Audiology clinic supervisor at Purdue University, and others.
Dr. Citron received his undergraduate degree in speech pathology and audiology from Northern Illinois University, his Master’s Degree in Audiology from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and his PhD in Audiology from Purdue University.
Dr. Citron is a founder and fellow of the American Academy of Audiology and served on its Balance Disorders Task Force and its Committee on Adult Hearing Aid Guidelines. He is a fellow member of the Academy of Doctors of Audiology, serving as its president in 1988-1990 when the blueprint for the Doctor of Audiology (AuD) was developed.
Dr. Citron has been an active Rotarian since 1983, and was club president in 2008-2009. With the support of the Rotary Foundation, he took a team to Goa India in 2009 and established a newborn hearing screening program.
Dr. Citron has authored publications and book chapters on hearing care, and has lectured extensively at local and national Audiology conferences.
Dr. Harvey provides training and consultation on mental health issues for persons with hearing loss. As a Clinical Psychologist, he has a private practice in Framingham, Mass., is an adjunct faculty at Boston University and is a consultant faculty member at Salus University, where he has taught on-line courses relating to the psychosocial aspects of hearing loss. Dr. Harvey writes a regular column, "What's On Your Mind?" in Hearing Loss, the journal for Self Help for the Hard-of-Hearing.
In addition to over 40 articles, his books include: Listen with the Heart: Relationships and Hearing Loss, The Odyssey of Hearing Loss: Tales of Triumph, Psychotherapy with Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons: A Systemic Model, and a co-edited book entitled Culturally Affirmative Psychotherapy with Deaf Persons.
