- After this course learners will be able to describe underlying hearing mechanisms driving spatial hearing abilities for individuals with single-sided deafness (SSD) using bone anchored implants and cochlear implants.
- After this course learners will be able to describe and contrast benefits of bone anchored implants and cochlear implants for the treatment of SSD.
- After this course learners will be able to describe results of preliminary studies demonstrating improvement in listening effort and reaction time for adults with SSD using bone anchored implants.

René H. Gifford, Ph.D, CCC-A, is a Professor of Hearing and Speech Sciences and Otolaryngology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She is the Director of the Cochlear Implant Program at the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center in the Division of Audiology as well as the Director of the Cochlear Implant Research Laboratory. Her NIH-funded research investigates basic auditory function and spatial hearing abilities for individuals using combined electric and acoustic stimulation (EAS), hearing preservation with cochlear implantation and speech perception for adults and children with cochlear implants and hearing aids. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and authored a book, now in its 2nd edition, entitled “Cochlear Implant Patient Assessment: Evaluation of Candidacy, Performance, and Outcomes.”
