The authors will review an online experiment conducted to evaluate speech recognition in noise in persons with normal and impaired hearing when the talker wore an opaque and a transparent mask. Significant benefit of the transparent mask over the opaque mask was attributed to the addition of facial cues rather than acoustic differences between the two masks.

Chi Tran is a second-year Doctor of Audiology student at the University of Texas at Dallas where she earned a BS in speech-language pathology and audiology in 2019. She is involved in the Hearing Health Lab under the direction of Dr. Linda Thibodeau and has contributed to research on assistive technology, the effects of face masks on speech recognition in noise, and smartphone app for hearing improvement. Her clinical interests include adults, pediatrics, advanced diagnostics, educational audiology, and humanitarian outreach. She serves as a Treasurer on the SAA UTD Chapter board for 2020-2021.
