Achieving Health Equity for LGBTQ People

Engagement of LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) populations is critical to providing culturally-responsive care and population-based health to reduce health disparities. This session provides an overview of LGBTQ health disparities, demographics, and terminology, as well as key strategies for bringing high quality care to LGBTQ people at health centers and other health care organizations. Participants will also learn about inclusive and effective communication with LGBTQ patients.

Presenter Disclosure: Financial: Alex S. Keuroghlian is the Director of Education and Training Programs at The Fenway Institute and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He directs the National LGBTQ Health Education Center and the National Center for Innovation in HIV Care, which are both HRSA-funded. He is the Public and Community Psychiatry Curriculum Director for the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH)/McLean psychiatry residency program and co-Director of the fourth-year clerkship in LGBTQ health at Harvard Medical School. He has authored several publications on topics that include HIV medication adherence, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance use disorders, transgender health, and homelessness among LGBTQ youth.
