Aspects of Effective Spoken Language Interventions for Children with Cochlear Implants
Course: #28145 1 HourThis workshop is intended for professionals who work with children who have hearing loss and are responsible for teaching early-childhood spoken language in a clinic and/or classroom setting. Topics will include clinical and classroom implications from recent intervention literature (e.g. performance-driven instruction and vocabulary teaching) on children with cochlear implants. (There is a difference in audio level between the two presenters.)

Course Presenters
Michael Douglas
Principal of the Mama Lere Hearing School
Michael is a speech-language pathologist and a certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist. He received his BA in speech-language pathology in 1994 and an MA in 1996 from the University of North Texas. He received his certification in auditory-verbal therapy in 2002. He has focused his career on teaching children with hearing loss to listen and speak in various settings including early childhood programs, schools, hospitals, private practice, and cochlear implant centers. He is the recipient of the Cochlear Americas Clinical Fellow Award and the Helen Beebe Scholarship. Michael served as the Director of the Speech Clinic and Director of Intervention Services at the Center for Hearing and Speech in Houston, TX from 2005 to 2012. There he managed the speech-language pathology clinic, an auditory-oral preschool and the family services department. He was an adjunct instructor at The University of Houston from 2010 to 2012. Currently, he is the Principal of the Mama Lere Hearing School in the Bill Wilkerson Center at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN. He mentors aspiring Cert. AVTs, lectures worldwide and has contributed to several peer review publications. He is the author of Dual-Language Learning for Children with Hearing Loss.
Emily Lund
Assistant Professor, Texas Christian University
Emily is an assistant professor at Texas Christian University and a speech language pathologist. She received her B.A. in Economics and Spanish, M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology, and Ph.D. in Hearing and Speech Sciences at Vanderbilt University. She worked as a clinical speech-language pathologist at the National Center for Childhood Deafness and Family Communication at the Bill Wilkerson Center and was a recipient of the Helen Beebe Scholarship. In her doctoral training program, she was a trainee on the Preparing Teachers/Scholars in Language and Literacy training grant funded by the US Department of Education. Her research program focuses on spoken language and literacy learning in children with hearing loss, particularly children from Spanish-English bilingual families. Dr. Lund’s studies are published in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education, Language, Speech and Hearing Services in Schools, Ear and Hearing, and Exceptional Children. Her research has been funded by the American Speech Language Hearing Foundation, the Texas Christian University Research and Creative Activities Fund, and most recently by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders of the National Institute of Health.
