I have tried to talk to students about when or how to make a referral when necessary and his explanation of how to do it is excellent. My relationship with my patients over the years has taught me that how we approach them, how we counsel them, and how we listen to them is extremely important and something I try to convey to the grad students that I supervise. This will help me improve my own counseling as well as my instruction to students.

This was a course on a very important topic, though I found the presentation of the material to be a little hard to follows and jargony. However, all of the points made resonated with the clinical approach that I've honed over the years.

It's kind of BS. As the professional, it is your obligation to give patients the information in a caring but concise way. You do your patients a disservice by tiptoeing around the actual diagnosis/treatment options. It is up to them whether they chose to comply but not acting with confidence or allowing them too much autonomy makes it seem like you don't know what you're doing. A patient makes their own appointments in many cases so it shouldn't be a surprise when it comes time for counseling.

I think this is a very interesting idea, ie a partnership with mental health, especially in regards to tinnitus management. We see so often patients getting tossed/referred back and forth between mental health and audiology for tinnitus, but I'm not sure we are effectively managing the patients concerns.

No one ever talks about the psychological aspects of hearing loss and how audiologists should help patients through their emotional journey. Connecting with patients and understanding their worries, fears, and hesitations re: hearing aids is critical to successful fittings. Audiologists change lives!

Great collaboration - we used the Clark and English text back in graduate school. I thought that it was essential at the time and this article is every bit as valuable if we truly want to help our patients get the most out of their time with us.

I appreciated having the psychological aspect of this article. We don't typically perceive that our answers can trigger a response in the patient that is immediately negative. During schooling we don't take any sort of psychological course to help us "read the room" and I feel that can be detrimental to not only private practice but other sectors as well. We are currently "trained" to inquire, test, and then spit back out the results. This needs to be normalized at a collegiate level.

It gave me more insight into why some patients that would benefit from amplification and are in denial or strongly resistant to treatment. It also gave me insight that I am doing the right thing by letting the patient know that I am only giving information and the decision about hearing aids/tinnitus masking is completely up to them.

I love any topics that support professional collaborations! Hearing loss is VERY MUCH something that (most of the time) needs to be addressed with counseling. I also believe that this collaboration would keep audiologists "honest" and help them remember that each patient is different and that emotions from or denial of hearing loss need to be addressed. I think sometimes we see patient after patient and can forget to be sensitive to the process of patients losing their hearing.
