Complex information was presented in a clear manner. I work at a VA and frequently see patients who have considerable difficulty understanding speech in noise although their hearing thresholds are within the normal range. This information is extremely valuable for counselling them. We do fit hearing aids to these patients, as they often have tinnitus. They tend to be our most satisfied patients who report life-changing results from wearing hearing aids. Thank you for this excellent explanation!

Fascinating topic. The material was presented in a well organized, easy to understand manner. I've worked in hearing conservation for the US Department of Defense for about 21 years, and have interviewed many service members exposed to noise with normal, unchanged hearing thresholds, but complain of difficulty understanding speech in low noise levels. I am anxious to see where this research leads us.

Working with soldiers I frequently come across cases where they are frustrated because of their lack of understanding speech yet have perfectly normal audiograms. This clarifies the pathology of their issues and may be useful to address the VA for the need for more specific testing other than purerone audiometry for disability determination.

When patients with case history indicating communication difficulty that is not consistent with audiometric findings, the knowledge of cochlear synaptopathy gives the clinician another possibility of cause other than central auditory processing deficit. It fills in so many blanks and question marks for cases like these.
