This course is part of the 10th Annual Noise Induced Hearing Loss Webinar Series on AudiologyOnline. Audiologists and students should be aware of the risk signs and predictors of suicide and how to assess this risk, so this presentation will include a list of suicide warning signs and some suggestions for how to react when a patient discloses this intent. Crisis resources and personal experience with this issue will be shared.
Learning Outcomes
- After this course learners will be able to explain why tinnitus, hyperacusis, and misophonia can be bothersome to patients.
- After this course learners will be able to describe risk factors and warning signs for suicidal behavior and use that information to formulate a plan for how to react when patients disclose suicidal intent.

Especially important information when providing tinnitus management. Pretty sure I have never heard it addressed. I've dealt with a few tinnitus patients who overdosed prior to tinnitus intervention and one guy who went postal at work --- hmmm, there were lots of potential interesting encounters which were never discussed in clinical training. Glad to see this information available.

Very informative and impactful. As a young clinician I had a tinnitus patient talk about suicide and I was very ill-prepared for the situation. The patient dies shortly after and I was shocked and racked with guilt. So much so, I went to the viewing in an attempt to learn how he had died. It turned out he had a heart attack, and did not commit suicide, but it completely changed my approach when dealing with tinnitus patient's who make suicidal comments.
