Understanding and Treating Severe and Profound Hearing Loss
Course: #26644 1 HourSensorineural hearing loss represents a significant change to a set of complex physiological processes responsible for taking acoustic input and changing it into a neural code. Multiple structures and processes are affected, and the effects vary significant from patient to patient. The range and extent of the damage and the range of patient to patient variability increases as the amount of threshold loss increases. For patients with severe or profound thresholds, the ability to faithfully encode an appropriate neural code is greatly disrupted. Not only are many sounds inaudible, but those sounds that can be made intense enough to be heard may be presented to the central auditory system in a manner in which very little of the information content in the signal has been preserved. The ability to present useful information to the cognitive system in the presence of severe or profound hearing loss requires both a comprehensive understanding of the nature of these impairments and also excellent signal processing. In this seminar, the approach taken by Oticon to treat these patients in our Dynamo, Sensei SuperPower and PowerPlus products will be explained. **Please adjust volume if necessary, sound may be low at times.

Learning Outcomes
- Participants will be able to describe the range of variability in the effects of severe and profound hearing loss.
- Participants will be able to explain how nonlinear signal processing can be individually activated and adjusted to meet the individual needs of the patients in this range of loss.
- Participants will be able to discuss how to develop a decision making strategy concerning the use and adjustment of frequency composition for individual patients.
