I primarily work with children who have autism spectrum disorder, and this article provided great insight in what we can do as pediatric audiologists for those who demonstrate normal hearing sensitivity. Outside professionals may often struggle to address listening challenges in noise, but I appreciate the in-depth discussion on remote microphone technology and its utility with this population.

I think the topic of ASD in conjunction with students with hearing loss is such an integral discussion that all professionals need to be having together. Often times, we are seeing the same “behaviors” and professionals seem to say it’s one or the other. We need to remember this co-morbidity, the prevalence of it, and how important it is to treat these students individually. Thank you for a great course

Erin understands each of these children are unique and deserve a relaxed audiologist to put both the child and parents at ease. Parents of a child with ASD diagnosis appreciates when a clinical professional doesn't "give up" on their child and takes their time to get to know their child. With VRA or Play Aud. -reward may not be a visual reward - but could be a spin in a chair ...and sometimes the first audiology appointment is letting the child play in the booth as part of transition needs.

Audiologists need to start diagnosing CAPD in kids with autism. There is no reason why they can't be provided cross checks are utilized and the audiologist is experienced in CAPD. Optometrists, SLPs, OTs, psychologists, etc. all confidently test individuals with autism. Please interview and have an audiologist experienced in CAPD talk about testing kids on the spectrum. I see far too many fall through the cracks and not get support for the auditory needs.

The course presented helpful, evidence-based information. However, it is difficult to apply clinically when you work in an area with low-socioeconomic status and no reimbursement for FM/RM devices. I wish additional strategies would have been shared that could meet the needs of children at various places on the spectrum.

I appreciated the author sharing her experiences with student with HL with ASD. I work in a residential deaf school and we have students whose families have chosen a visual language for their students rather than amplification, and it I have seen many of the behaviors caused by potential auditory overstimulation reduced when language became visual vs. auditory. I've also seen students with mild to moderate losses on the spectrum who definitely prefer the use of RMS.

The description of auditory issues of normal hearing kids with ASD is interesting, as is the use of RM technology. The children we see with ASD would not be able to complete the testing outlined here (dichotic digits??). A simple tympanogram is often a struggle.
