Basic Audiology

I am going to show how much of an audiology geek I am by bragging about one of our feature articles this month, Acoustic Reflex Threshold (ART) Patterns: An Interpretation Guide for Students and Supervisors by Dr. Diana Emanuel. The acoustic reflex you might say, come on, I have been practicing for 20 years! Well, for me it is all about getting back to fundamentals that makes you a great audiologist. Hasn't it ever happened that your extern asked you a basic clinical question and you had to go and look it up? Well, this handy little article is a great reference for anyone, so I encourage you to take a little time to look this article over.

Communication Diet

When most people hear the word "diet" they think of those Jenny Craig commercials with Valerie Bertinelli or Kirstie Alley. The real meaning of the word is really everything that you eat. Graham Weir this month writes about his Communication Diet Theory. When you think about how having a healthy diet is as important as having good communication skills, checking to make sure that your patients have a good communication diet is a good way to think about how they interact with the world, versus the number of decibels they hear.

Cochlear Implants

Our final feature article is from Dr. Steven Huart, Unidentified and Underserved: Cochlear Implant Candidates in the Hearing Aid Dispensing Practice. Those of us who focus on the hearing aid dispensing side of things may not be aware of the options that are available for persons with moderate to profound hearing loss. Review the latest guidelines, you may decide that you have several patients who can benefit.
