Accessorizing the Hearing Aid

John Cariola, AuD

June 25, 2012

Question

There is so much wireless technology available for our patients to take advantage of, but quite frankly, not all of my patients are savvy or comfortable using these devices. I'd like them to be able to use some of the wireless features without bogging them down with wireless terminology and gadgets. What do you recommend?

Answer

Before we released our myPAL wireless accessory, the most popular accessory was our remote control. It is simple and provides a lot of functionality for users in a very common familiar format. The remote control is probably the most common bundled device with Beltone's aids because it is so easy to use.

A remote will enable the wearer to change the programs and the volume on the hearing instruments, either binaurally or each ear separately. It can also mute the instruments.

Our remote control will also turn on the wireless streaming to pick up signals from the TV Link or the myPAL streaming accessory. The remote also has the capability to go back to the initial settings if the patient doesn't remember what volume changes were made or what program they're in.

Remote controls typically have physical push buttons for ease of use. Beltone's remote has a digital display that will show the current program and indicate bars for volume setting. In the software, the professional can manually change the program names and then these names will display on the remote.

If your patient is not quite up for the full-fledged wireless leap, a remote control is a great place to start. You may find over time that the patient will be ready to start using a streaming or gateway device, such as the MyPAL.
