Lafayette, IN -Marissa Mendrygal, a third-year student at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), was recently presented with an Audiology Foundation of America (AFA) Outstanding Au.D.

Student scholarship. Mendrygal received $4,500 in support of her academic endeavors. The Outstanding Au.D. Student Scholarships were established to recognize and support the "best and brightest" Au.D. students. These scholarships are funded by a grant from the Oticon Foundation, also known as the William Demant and Wife Ida Emilie Foundation.

Mendrygal was nominated for the award by the faculty at UTD for her academic achievement, individual leadership, clinical skills and local and international community service. AFA Chair Deborah Price, Au.D., presented the award Jan. 26, 2007, at the Callier Center in Dallas during a third-year student presentation event.

"As I read over all of Marissa's credits and accomplishments, and saw the outstanding things she has done, it just made me so proud that this caliber of student chose the profession of audiology," said Price. "She is an outstanding student and will be a real credit to the profession. It was a joy to present her with this award."

The AFA is a non-profit foundation founded in 1989 to lead audiology's transition to a doctoring profession with the Au.D. as its unique designator.
