Why Do Hearing Aid Batteries Test OK Despite Low Battery Alert Signal?

Question

Sometimes my patients say that they hear the low battery alert on their hearing aids, but the batteries test out OK with their battery testers.  Why is that?

Answer

Thanks for your question.  The low battery alert is sounded when the hearing aid detects that the battery is beginning to drop voltage.  Most battery testers for hearing aid batteries are not sensitive to small voltage changes and may not pick up on anything until the battery voltage has dropped substantially.  Therefore, it's recommended to change the battery when the low battery alert signal is noticed.
