Functional auditory assessment and continuing assessment is critical in order to determine the current level of function, develop appropriate goals for intervention, and achieve maximum outcomes. Learning to listen drives everything else: speech intelligibility, language competence, reading, academics, and life-long learning. This course offers a detailed look at functional auditory assessment and intervention, to provide audiologists with a better understanding of hearing loss in children in terms of the broader speech, language, learning and academic contexts. Additional videos to demonstrate key points will be included.

- After this course, participants will be able to describe an assessment protocol model used successfully for children with hearing loss at Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech-Jacksonville (a.k.a., Clarke Jacksonville).

Susan G. Allen, MED, CED, MEd, CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVEd, is the founder of Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech, Jacksonville campus (formerly known as Clarke Jacksonville Auditory/Oral Center for Deaf Children). She retired after serving as the school and clinic’s director for 16 years. She is the author of the Auditory Perception Test for the Hearing Impaired, third edition, and the companion guidebook “From Assessment to Intervention, Plural Publishing, 2016. Her life’s passion has been to teach children to listen and talk and to function successfully in the mainstream alongside hearing peers. She has 50 years of experience teaching deaf children to listen for intelligible speech and oral language and has presented over 100 papers, courses, and workshops nationally. She has been invited as a keynote speaker and lecturer at numerous conventions and universities. She has served on several committees and Boards for special needs children. Susan served as the Listening and Spoken Language Supervisor of Clarke Jacksonville for 23 years; currently, she consults, mentors LSLS candidates and provides auditory-verbal therapy.
