SoundBites: Dementia & Hearing Loss: Studying the Research
June marks the longest day of the year. For the Alzheimer’s Association, The Longest Day is an important day of awareness and fundraising. In this episode, Dave sits down with Dr. Heather Snyder, Vice President of Medical and Scientific Affairs at the Alzheimer’s Association, to discuss the ongoing research into the connection between hearing loss and dementia. One of the latest studies, which found that treating hearing loss could mean reducing the risk of dementia, was released in The Lancet this spring. Dr. Snyder also talks about the early warning signs of Alzheimer’s Disease, and why it’s important for hearing healthcare providers to be aware of them.

Hearing Loss, Hearing Aids, and Dementia: How Might Recent Studies Inform Patient Care
Given their age, many hearing aid wearers are at risk for acquiring dementia. Additionally, hearing loss is believed to be a leading modifiable risk factor associated with dementia. For these reasons, it is essential for clinicians to stay abreast of the latest studies in these areas. The purpose of this podcast is to review recent studies addressing the topics of hearing loss, hearing aid use and dementia and how the findings of these recent studies can inform patient care.

Tailor-made: Making Customization Cool Again Will Overcome the Challenges of OTC Devices
More than 30 million U.S. adults have disabling hearing loss. In addition to negatively affecting the quality of life, hearing impairment is associated with dementia, depression, and social isolation. Despite the well-demonstrated benefits of hearing aids, relatively few eligible people (an estimated 15% to 30%) wear them. As federal regulations of over-the-counter hearing aids get closer to becoming reality, this course attempts to review the opportunities, threats, and challenges associated with hearing aids being sold over-the-counter without the direct involvement of a licensed audiologist. A primary focus of this course will be to demonstrate how the hearing care professional’s ability to customize along two fronts, customizing a start-gain target and customizing ear coupling, will allow them to stand apart from OTC and other online retailers.

Modern Auditory Training - Hearing Loss Challenges Don't Stop at the Ears
The co-morbidities of hearing loss include social isolation and loneliness, depression, increased risk of falls, as well as cognitive decline, and related dementias. In this presentation, we will describe how digital therapeutics are changing the face of healthcare, and then present an example of how digital therapeutics may be used to treat hearing loss and its downstream effects.

Hearing Intervention and Cognition: Review of the Evidence and Current Trials
Hearing loss is associated with decreased health-related quality of life, accelerated cognitive decline, and dementia. Cognition may be amenable to comprehensive hearing rehabilitative treatment consisting of the use of hearing technologies (hearing aids, Osseointegrated devices, and other assistive devices) and rehabilitative training. However, there are no randomized controlled trials to definitely show that hearing intervention can reduce the rate of cognitive decline. Furthermore, little is known about the different types, degrees, and configurations of hearing loss and how that may influence cognitive outcomes. A review of evidence and current studies will be provided.

Understanding the Hearing Loss-Dementia Relationship: What Epidemiologic Studies Can and Cannot Tell Us
This presentation will review and evaluate recent public health research that demonstrates the implications of hearing loss for the health and functioning of older adults, particularly with respect to cognitive functioning, brain aging, and dementia. It will focus on the strengths and limitations of epidemiologic research in order to provide practicing audiologists with some basic tools needed to interpret and apply epidemiologic research in the clinical setting, as well as to define priorities for future research.
