This course will provide information regarding guidelines that can be used to identify patients who should be referred for a cochlear implant candidacy evaluation. It will include tools that clinicians can use to support their counseling of patients about cochlear implant evaluations and will include information regarding typical outcomes received by patients who receive a cochlear implant.

This course will provide case examples of patients who have been evaluated for a cochlear implant with a summary of their outcomes. Examples will include testing of patients with Single Sided Deafness (SSD), traditional candidates, and patients who qualify for hearing preservation surgery, such as those with normal low frequency hearing and severe to profound high frequency hearing loss.

The Minimum Speech Test Battery (MSTB) for adults was first introduced in 1996 and first updated in 2011. Both versions of the MSTB have been widely used by clinicians to evaluate cochlear implant candidacy and to post-operatively evaluate performance. After an extensive review with a panel of experts, the MSTB – Revision 3 is now available. This course provides an overview of the current evidence-based best practice guidelines and case studies to demonstrate clinical application.

This course focuses on the interdisciplinary approach to diagnosing central auditory processing disorder (CAPD)/deficits across the lifespan. Specific topics include the determination of candidacy for central auditory processing evaluations, test selection and scoring, interpretation of results, and making meaningful connections between a patient’s evaluation results to their subjectively reported auditory and communication challenges.

This course will help audiologists and vestibular providers alike solidify their knowledge of obtaining a case history and other patient information that is useful for vestibular testing. Asking more direct questions, determining candidacy, using functional assessment tools, helping to appropriately counsel, and clinical considerations for testing are covered in this course.

This course discusses two recently recognized components of sensorineural hearing loss that can challenge speech understanding in noise despite normal or restored audibility, and contribute to divergent listening outcomes among patients with similar audiograms. The diversity of possible cochlear pathophysiology profiles that can occur under the common umbrella of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) highlights the need for precision diagnostic tools that can guide further individualization of hearing devices, and improve the specificity of candidacy evaluations for pharmacological interventions that are on the horizon.

Advances in various hearing technologies have blurred the lines of rehabilitative candidacy for patients with different degrees of measurable hearing. Thus, the purpose of this course provides an overview of auditory outcomes and evidence-based practices for programming, verifying, and validating various hearing technologies including hearing aids and auditory implants.

This course will review the multiple roles audiologists and hearing aid dispensers play in the continuity of care for hearing aid users—from screening and referring potential cochlear implant candidates to performing comprehensive cochlear implant evaluations prior to referring candidates to cochlear implant surgical teams. Adults with hearing loss live with a chronic condition that requires hearing services for life. Professionals working with them must be able to provide services and guidance to these patients throughout their lifespan. Depending on their licensure and scope of practice, hearing aid dispensers and audiologists can screen, assess, and counsel their own patients regarding cochlear implants as a treatment option.

Considerable variation exists across the medical and audiologic communities regarding determination of cochlear implant (CI) candidacy. While criteria exist from the FDA for children and adults and from CMS for Medicare beneficiaries, different clinics and even audiologists within the same clinic use varying protocols to determine CI candidacy in different age groups and also considering factors other than hearing status. To provide guidance on this topic, the ACI Alliance Board of Directors commissioned four papers to provide guidelines for candidacy for children and adults with bilateral hearing loss and those with single-sided deafness. Task forces were appointed to develop the guidelines with membership drawn from across the care continuum to include audiologists, surgeons, speech-language pathologists, and others involved in CI patient care. This course will review each of those four candidacy guidelines.

This course will introduce participants to the ACI Alliance Guidelines for cochlear implantation in children with single sided deafness (SSD). Instructors will use case studies to guide attendees through highlights of the document including candidacy, evaluation, and programming recommendations.
